Federated identity reaches 380 member institutions

Dec 12, 2025 JVNC Newsroom JVNC.NET

The JVNC federated identity fabric now serves 380 member institutions, covering roughly 1.4 million researchers, students and staff. Single sign-on for shared compute, data transfer and instrumentation is available across the entire cooperative.

The service is built on standards-track protocols with hardware-backed assurance levels, so a lab in one country can grant temporary compute rights to a collaborator in another without issuing new credentials.

Over the past year the identity team processed 92 million authentication events, with a median assertion time of 118 milliseconds and a failed-authentication rate below 0.4%.

The next milestone is attribute-based authorisation for instruments: telescopes, sequencers and beamlines that currently require manual account provisioning.

01 About

JVNC is a non-profit cooperative running a low-latency research network, a distributed compute fabric and an identity layer for its member institutions.

We started in 1985 as the John von Neumann Computing Network — a handful of university sites sharing a single backbone. The ambition has not changed: make distant machines behave like nearby ones.

Today the cooperative carries science traffic between 380 institutions, operates its own optical layer, and publishes every measurement it makes.
